Private school tuition with Alabama ESA and scholarship funds
What is covered, conditions and how to pay

- Covered with conditions. Covered at a participating school; some school fees are disallowed.
- Conditions
- Tuition and listed fees at a participating school (an accredited public or private K5-12 Alabama school approved as a participating school). The student must be enrolled there, with proof of enrollment submitted; a participating public school must charge the student tuition (out-of-district). Also covered: fees for an education-based after-school or summer program run by a participating school, within the academic year, not child care.
- Limits
- The award for a participating-school student is $7,000; families pay anything above the ESA balance. Only for services in the 2026–27 academic year. Allowed fees: academic, activity, administration, application, book, curriculum, enrollment/registration/pre-registration, fine arts, library, music, programming, resource, school, science lab, security, student, supply, technology, testing, and tuition.

- School invoice with the required fields (p. 12). Charges for several students must be listed separately for each student. The invoice must not say it is paid from CHOOSE Act funds (ESP Guide p. 7).
- Not allowed
- Annual fee; athletic/sports fee; before and after school child care; capital or building campaign; child care; commitment fee; extracurricular activity fee; food; field trip; fundraising; insurance; late fee; maintenance fee; missed session/cancellation fee; PTO/PTA fee; school accreditation fee; senior class/graduation fee; transportation; uniforms. Next year's enrollment or registration fees (FAQ Q33).
